Hidden Headlamps

Hidden headlamps are an automotive styling feature that conceals an automobile’s headlamps when they are not in use. Depending on the design, the headlamps may be mounted in a housing that rotates so as to sit flush with the front end as on the Porsche 928, may retract into the hood and/or fenders as on the 19682004 Chevrolet Corvette, or may be concealed behind retractable or rotating grille panels as on the 1966 Dodge Charger.

Hidden headlamps first appeared on the Cord 810 in 1936. Each unit had a crank on its side of the dashboard, which was turned by hand when the headlamps were needed.

Powered hidden headlamps were pioneered in GM’s Buick Y-Job concept car of 1938 and were used briefly on Chrysler Corporation’s 1942 production DeSoto. The feature’s popularity has waxed and waned over time. Hidden headlamps regained popularity in the late 1960s, particularly in the US market where aerodynamic headlamps were not permitted. A relatively large variety of cars incorporated hidden headlamps in the 1970s, ’80s, and early 1990s. Currently, hidden headlamps are out of favour.

Numerous car manufacturers used hidden headlamps to get around the headlight height regulation in the United States, for instance Toyota exported their retractable headlight version of the AE86, known domestically as the Sprinter Trueno in favour of their Corolla Levin as the former had higher headlamp height, enough to satisfy US regulations rather than raise body height which affected handling.

US laws now permit aerodynamic headlamps, relative to which hidden headlamps represent added cost, weight, and complexity as well as reliability concerns as cars age. Internationalized ECE auto safety regulations have also recently incorporated pedestrian-protection provisions restricting protuberances from car bodies, making it more difficult and expensive to design compliant pop-up headlamps.

The last time pop-up headlamps appeared on a volume-production car was in 2004 when both the Lotus Esprit and C5 Corvette ended production.

Society Must Be Defended: Lectures at the College de France, 1975-1976

$18

An examination of the relation between war and politics, by one of the twentieth century’s most influential thinkersFrom 1971 until 1984 at the Collège de France, Michel Foucault gave a series of lectures ranging freely and conversationally over the range of his research. In Society Must Be Defended, Foucault deals with the emergence in the early seventeenth century of a new understanding of war as the permanent basis of all institutions of power, a hidden presence within society that could be deciphered by an historical analysis. Tracing this development, Foucault outlines the genealogy of power and knowledge that had become his dominant concern.

 # Coaching Tweet Book01

# Coaching Tweet Book01

Mentor…teacher…guide…friend…a coach is all of these, and more. Sterling Lanier, author of ‘#COACHING tweet Book01′, has decades of experience coaching CEOs and CEOs-in-the-wings, and knows that coaching is no secret or magical process. Rather it is the art of inspiring, encouraging and motivating people through active listening, by asking thoughtful and thought-provoking questions and helping to set ambitious but realistic goals and action plans. It is a journey of self discovery, as much for the coach as for the person being coached. In the corporate world, a typical ‘coaching’ session consists of an annual manager or supervisor soliloquy in which the employee receives ‘a mound of criticism sandwiched between two thin slices of praise.’ Instead, as Sterling shares with us, coaching should consist of a series of frequent dialogs between employee and manager on the employee’s goals, action plans, measurement milestones, alignment to corporate direction, and resources needed for improvement. In ‘#COACHING tweet Book01′, Sterling has distilled his practical experience into bite-sized insights on the power, practices and sheer joy of coaching. Individual sections cover coaching philosophy–coaching from the heart and being fully present in the moment–and coaching practices, which reveal the tools of the trade, including such subtleties as ensuring non-judgmental listening and peeling back the layers so that clients voice the hidden issues. This little gem is written in the popular tweet format, which makes it easy to read but also, even more important, easy to immediately put to good use in your own work and life. As Sterling succinctly puts it, anyone can seize the opportunity to be a coach for someone–for a friend, a colleague, a business associate, even a family member or a child. #COACHING tweet sets you on the path to being a successful coach–here and now.’#COACHING tweet Book01′ is part of the THINKaha series

”We stranded in school”: Survival literacy through adaptive colorations among high-achieving African American middle school students.

$49.99

This study, which examined the literate participation of high-achieving African American sixth graders in a middle school language arts classroom heavily influenced by the demands of preparing students to pass state assessments, is situated at the intersection of calls to recognize, value, and utilize students’ cultural and linguistic resources in classrooms and policy pressures that make doing such a thing seem increasingly challenging. A sociocultural view of learning and literacy was adopted in this research. That is, literacy learning was understood to be a culturally and historically situated, social sense-making activity. Additionally, a critical sociocultural perspective helped reveal how participants in the study negotiated multiple literate identities, employed agency, and exercised power.;Many sociocultural researchers have alluded to or exposed the existence of “hidden literacies” in schools and classrooms. By describing students’ unofficial, unsanctioned, and alternative literacies on the margins and in the underlife of classrooms, these studies have rendered visible students’ multiple and varied communicative experiences, their use of literacy as a tool for constructing identities and forging social relationships, and their capacity for adaptive flexibility across literate situations and contexts. The purpose of this ethnographic case study was to shed further light on hidden literacies by identifying and describing instances of hidden literacies in full view, or literacy hiding in plain sight. Specifically, this study aimed to uncover and illuminate the role students played in the phenomenon of literacy hiding in plain sight.;A theoretical framework of adaptive colorations was used to view and articulate the dimensions and dynamics of literacy hiding in plain sight in this classroom. Adaptive colorations explains the phenomenon of literacy hiding in plain sight in terms of students’ literate identities in relation to the particularities of the

Though the project of "rereading" an author occurs every time we pick up a book, whether that be an original work of fiction, an adaptation, or a book of criticism about that author, "rereading" is also the theoretical approach that I take in this thesis to Thomas Hardy and to certain of his twentieth and twenty-first century reincarnations. With Gerard Genette's concept of hypertextuality from Palimpsests: Literature in the Second Degree, I look both at Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles and Posy Simmonds's graphic novel, Tamara Drewe, which is based on Far from the Madding Crowd, and investigate the ways in which we have inherited Hardy after years of his fiction circulating in secondary and post-secondary schools and years of literary criticism. Hardy studies has a long history of pigeon-holing Hardy as the simple archivist of rural Wessex, but when new versions of Hardy appear in our literary culture, such as Simmonds's novel, they shine new light on the author, often reaffirming certain Hardy-esque qualities, but also revealing connections that may have long been hidden from readers' views because of the overwhelming power of that rural Hardy. This thesis is an effort to reveal some of those connections, to point out where the traces of new "Hardys" exist in old "Hardys" and where the old Hardy continues to hang on. I hope that, by interrogating this interchange between the nineteenth-century Hardy and his contemporary selves, some new directions for Hardy studies can be suggested—directions that are not restricted to the useful, but worn paths of tragedy and rurality.
