Is a smoke alarm damaging to my pet’s ears? When the battery goes low the sound scares the dog a lot?

The when the battery goes low on the smoke alarm it lets out a high pitch squeeking beep. I am concerned that the dog with his sensitive ears is hearing not only a stronger beep but perhaps a sound that we can’t hear. Is anyone aware of studies into the harm that these can cause? Do manufacturers of Smoke Alarms have to test it for animal safety?
Given it serves an important purpose in the house I am thinking this has been overlooked!
time to change that battery…

It certainly is irritating to your animals, but it is not damaging to your animals. If it was, the animal would eventually ignore it from deafness. Manufacturers have found that the animal response has been a boon to the effectiveness of fire alarms (as a dog can actually walk over to you and push you to wake you up). There is no real ultra high frequency pitch given off on these things like there are on emergency vehicles. If you are concerned about the damage still, consider adopting a full home system with a power trunk feeding to all of the alarms.
